Renewed cooperation between UNESCO and ISESCO

Paris, 11 June - UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and the Director-General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri signed a new framework agreement on 5 June to reinforce the longstanding cooperation between both institutions. The first such cooperation agreement was signed in 1984 and renewed in 2010. (More...)

The year 2011 is a turning point in the defence and promotion of human rights. In the Arab world, millions of people took to the street in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and elsewhere to assert their rights and demand change. Young activists and ordinary citizens did the same in Chile, Greece and cities such as Madrid, Jerusalem and New York, calling for more freedom and social equality. (More...)

World Press Freedom Day was born twenty years ago in the vision of a group of journalists gathered in Windhoek, Namibia. The Windhoek Declaration was a call to arms to protect the fundamental principles of the freedom of expression as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration Human Rights.
